The Sisal mangrove tour takes you into one of the most pristine coastal ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico. Gliding silently by kayak or canoe through the natural channels of this ancient forest, you enter a world that operates on its own timescale: crocodiles that have basked on these same banks for decades, herons that return to the same nesting trees each year, fish that have never seen a net.
The mangrove ecosystem near Sisal covers thousands of hectares of coastal territory and functions as one of the most important ecological zones on the northern Yucatan coast. It serves as nursery habitat for the commercial fish species that sustain Sisal's fishing community, as a water filtration system for the coastal lagoons, and as a carbon sink that plays a measurable role in regional climate regulation.
The Tour Route: What You'll Experience
Our standard mangrove tour follows the most scenic channels of the mangrove system, passing through zones dominated by red mangrove (with its dramatic arching prop roots), white mangrove and black mangrove. The route takes approximately 2 hours and includes stops for wildlife observation at the best spots our guides have identified through years of daily experience in these waters.
Wildlife Highlights of the Sisal Mangrove Tour
Regular sightings on mangrove tours include: Morelet's crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) — Mexico's native freshwater crocodile, present in good numbers in the mangrove channels; roseate spoonbill; tricolored heron; little blue heron; green kingfisher; American anhinga; and in season, migrating warblers resting in the mangrove canopy. We also pass schools of juvenile fish and occasionally see manatees in the calmer channels.
