Mexico has dozens of kiteboarding destinations, from La Ventana in Baja to Los Barriles, from El Cuyo to La Paz. Each has its advocates and its season. But for kiters who have explored the country's coastlines seriously, the northern Yucatan coast — and Sisal specifically — keeps appearing on the radar as one of the most underrated and most authentic kite destinations in the entire country.
The combination of factors that make Sisal exceptional for kiteboarding: consistent Norte winds in the best kite season (November-March), long beach with no obstacles or hazards, flat-water lagoon option alongside open Gulf waves, warm water year-round, minimal crowd even at peak season, and a genuine fishing village atmosphere that makes the off-water experience as good as the on-water one.
Comparing Sisal to Mexico's Other Kite Destinations
La Ventana (Baja Sur): Strong, consistent wind in season, good infrastructure, beautiful setting. More crowded and more expensive than Sisal. Great for riders who want amenities. El Cuyo (Yucatan): Located 3 hours east of Sisal, with very consistent wind and flat water. Less infrastructure than Sisal but beloved by the kite community. Los Barriles (Baja Sur): Excellent cross-shore wind, warm winter, good schools. Very popular, higher prices. Sisal's advantage is the combination of quality wind, uncrowded beach and easy access from Merida.
Wind Statistics and Technical Conditions at Sisal
Sisal averages 150-180 days per year with rideable wind (over 12 knots). Peak season (December-February) sees consistent nortes bringing 15-28 knots for 3-7 day stretches. Wind direction is primarily N/NE in peak season, creating excellent cross-shore to cross-onshore conditions. The beach faces north, which means offshore wind is not a concern. The lagoon behind the beach offers completely flat water when the outer beach has chop or small waves.
